Dr Christopher Snoeck
Co-Investigator
Vrije Universiteit Brussel
Prof Snoeck is a specialist in strontium isotope analysis in modern and archaeological materials. Most importantly for the purposes of this project, his doctoral research provided the first firm experimental evidence demonstrating the reliability of strontium measurements (isotopic and concentration) made on calcined bone, a key evidence source for this project. He has also been very involved in experimental work on pretreatment methods for dental enamel, another directly relevant archaeological material. In addition to publishing on strontium isotopes and mobility in the Neolithic and Bronze Age in Britain and Ireland, Prof Snoeck has undertaken considerable baseline sampling of biologically available strontium in order to construct ‘isoscapes’ (isotope maps) which hugely facilitate the calibration of individual readings.
